Christian was killed in action in July 1917 and was buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium.

VICTORIA CROSS

The Victoria Cross is the ultimate recognition for bravery on the field of battle. Thirteen men who were either born in Birmingham, or who had close connections to the city and spent considerable parts of their lives here, were awarded the Victoria Cross during the war. Their place of birth was Birmingham unless stated otherwise.

• Second Lieutenant Herbert James, 4th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, at Gallipoli on 28 June 1915.

• Private Arthur Vickers, 2nd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, during an attack at Hulluch on 25 September 1915.

• Private Thomas George Turrall, 10th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, at La Boiselle on 3 July 1916.

• Sergeant Alfred Joseph Knight, 2/8th Battalion London Regiment, at Alberta Section, Ypres, on 20 September 1917.

• Flight Lieutenant Alan Jerrard, No. 66 Squadron Royal Flying Corps, near Mansuè, Italy, on 30 March 1918. Born in London but moved to Sutton Coldfield as a child.

• Sergeant Norman Augustus Finch, Royal Marine Artillery, HMS Vindictive, at Zeebrugge on 22–23 April 1918.

• Sergeant Albert Gill, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, at Delville Wood on 27 July 1916. Killed in action, 27 July.

• Lance-Corporal George Onions, 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, at Achiet-le-Petit on 22 August 1918. Born in Bilston.

• Acting Sergeant Harold John Colley, M.M., 10th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, during a counter-attack at Martinpuich on 25 August 1918. Killed in action, 25 August. Born in Smethwick.

• Lance-Corporal Alfred Wilcox, 2/4th Battalion, Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, near Laventie on 12 September 1918.

• Lance-Corporal William Amey, 1/8th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, during the attack on Landrecies on 4 November 1918.

• Acting Lieutenant Colonel James Neville Marshall, Irish Guards attached to 16th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, during the attack on Sambre-Oise Canal near Catillon, 4 November 1918. Killed in action, 4 November. Born in Manchester.

• Acting Major Arnold Horace Santo Waters, 218th Field Company Royal Engineers, while bridging the Sambre-Oise Canal on 4 November 1918. Born in Plymouth.
